What Angels Actually Fund in India: The Unstated Criteria Nobody Writes Down

Angels say they invest in 'founder quality.' That's not a criterion. Here's what that phrase actually means when you reverse-engineer the deals that got backed.

Indian angel investment decisions correlate more strongly with founder network overlap than with any stated investment criterion — angels back founders they've met through trusted nodes in their network, and the quality evaluation is heavily anchored to the trust already established in that introduction.

The most predictive unstated criterion for Indian angel funding is 'asymmetric upside signal' — the angel's ability to tell a plausible story about how this company becomes 10x from current valuation. Angels who can't construct that story in their head during the first meeting almost never invest, regardless of how good the business fundamentals are.

First-time Indian founders systematically underestimate how much angels are investing in the relationship, not the company.
