Pre-Seed Funding
The earliest institutional funding a startup raises — typically ₹25 lakh to ₹2 crore — before it has significant traction.

Definition
Pre-seed funding is the first external capital a startup raises, typically from founders' savings, friends and family, angel investors, or angel networks. It comes before the startup has substantial revenue, users, or validated product-market fit. Pre-seed capital usually funds: building the MVP, initial user acquisition, hiring the first 2–3 team members, and running experiments to validate core assumptions.
The typical pre-seed round in India ranges from ₹25 lakh to ₹2 crore, though this varies significantly by sector. Deep tech and biotech pre-seeds can be ₹5–10 crore due to R&D requirements. Consumer internet pre-seeds are often below ₹1 crore.
Pre-seed investors are taking the highest risk — they're backing founders and ideas with minimal evidence. In exchange, they expect the highest ownership percentages and the lowest valuations.
India Context
India's pre-seed ecosystem is growing but fragmented. Key pre-seed sources: angel networks (IAN, Mumbai Angels, Lead Angels), micro-VCs (Titan Capital, India Quotient, 100X.VC, Gemba Capital), accelerators (Y Combinator India cohort, Antler India, Surge), and family offices increasingly participating at pre-seed valuations of ₹3–15 crore.
A critical India difference: many pre-seed rounds never formally close. Founders raise ₹50 lakh from friends/family, start building, and go directly to seed with some traction. The formal pre-seed structure is more common in metro cities and among founder-MBAs from premier institutions.
Example
Meera raises a ₹75 lakh pre-seed on SAFEs from 3 angels at a ₹5 crore post-money cap. She uses it to build her MVP (₹30L), hire one engineer (₹20L over 6 months), and run initial user acquisition experiments (₹25L). She reaches 500 active users with 40% week-1 retention — enough signal to raise a ₹3 crore seed round 8 months later.
